Schmith saw sharpening files - an essential for chainsaw users
Chainsaw sharpeningfiles, unlike round files, square files or triangular files, are not used for peeling off excess material from the work surface, but only for precise and efficient sharpening of chainsaw chains, in order to keep them sharp and consistently efficient. Regular use of a chain sharpening file ensures that the chain will always guarantee fast and clean cuts, extending the life of both it and the chainsaw.
Saw chain sharpening accessories are designed to perfectly fit the chain's cutting teeth in the specified size. Chain sharpening files have a profile that allows them to sharpen the cutting edge at the right angle, so they can quickly and effectively restore the chain's sharpness after it has been dulled by contact with sand or other debris.
How to use chainsaw chain sharpening files?
The process of sharpening a chain is a simple operation that requires only a little precision. To properly sharpen the chain with a saw chain file, you need to:
- Prepare the chainsaw - turn it off and lock it, as well as immobilize the bar in a vise, for example, which will prevent the chain from moving during sharpening. It is also worth at this point to locate and mark, for example with a marker, the approximate point from which you will start and where you will finish sharpening.
- Choosing the right file size - choose a file with the right diameter and length, matching the size of the chain to be sharpened. When selecting a file, make sure that it extends above the edge of the tooth by about ¼ of its diameter.
- Set the correct sharpening angle - which is usually taken in the range of 25-30 degrees, relative to the guide bar of the saw. Some files are available with guides to help maintain the correct angle and keep the correct depth of sharpening.
- Sharpening the chain teeth - when sharpening the chain, the file should be guided in a smooth motion, pressing it only forward, from the inside of the tooth to the outside. After the grinding is done, return the file to the starting position without touching the previously sharpened surface. Most often, it is enough to make three to five strokes with the file on each tooth, in order to sharpen it evenly.
- Sharpen the depth stops - after finishing sharpening the cutting teeth, it is also necessary to grind to an equal height the so-called hooves, responsible for the key actions of the chain. To file them, it is worth using a flat file.
Types and sizes of chain saw files
Saw files can be divided according to their shape and size, which is crucial for proper fit to the chain. By shape, a distinction is made between:
- Round chain sharpening file - this is the most common and popular type of file for sharpening cutting teeth. It has a round cross-section and is available in many sizes, corresponding to chain sizes.
- Flat chain sharpening file - these are mostly small flat metal files, used for filing depth stops.
- Star file for chain sharpening - star-shaped files are used for sharpening specialized chains that require a different sharpening geometry than standard chains.
Chain files are also divided by their size, which should be precisely matched to the chain pitch, which is the distance between three consecutive rivets divided by two. This distance is expressed in inches, for this reason, a distinction is made between:
- 4.0 mm 5/32" file - Designed for chains with a pitch of 1/4", that is, chains found in small and medium-sized petrol, cordless and electric saws.
- 4.8 mm 3/16 "file - designed for chains with a .325" pitch
- File 5.5 mm 7/32" - designed for chains with a pitch of 3/8", i.e. chains most commonly found on professional, medium and larger petrol saws.
- 6.5 mm 1/4" file - designed for chains with a .404" pitch, i.e. chains found in large and heavy chainsaws.
