The group of different wrenches called adjustable wrenches is very extensive. The different types of tools that are included in it, in some cases, differ dramatically in their construction. For this reason, there are several types of pipe wrenches, such as:
- French wrench - this is one of the most popular and characteristic representatives of the group of adjustable wrenches. It is made of jaws located under each other, placed on a threaded or serrated guide, the position of which is changed by means of a rotary screw. This type of tool is used most often in hydraulic work.
- English wrench - has a long handle, often covered with plastic or rubber, and two jaws, the upper of which is invariably fixed, and the adjustment of the opening is carried out by moving the lower jaw. Adjustment of the jaw opening is possible through a worm screw. Wrenches of this type are used only for loosening and tightening bolts and nuts.
- Swedish wrench - this is a very distinctive model, having arms that can be adjusted with a screw. Adjustable Swedish wrenches are used most often in plumbing, thanks to their uncomplicated design, they can be operated and adjusted with one hand, which makes them very useful tools especially when working in tight and hard-to-reach areas.
- Frog-type wrench - is built in two handles and a pair of jaws, adjustable with a screw or button. In general, wrenches of this type have a small size and low dead weight. Thanks to these features, they are used not only for plumbing work, but also for assembly and installation work.
- Hydraulic wrench - it is distinguished from other wrenches by the type of jaws, which have a specific design and enlarged serrations, allowing for very strong compression. Wrenches of this type are used in installation, plumbing and gas work, because their design prevents the workpiece from slipping, even if it has irregular shapes.
- Self-clamping wrench - this type of tool is equipped with a clamp and settings, which are operated automatically, usually with a locking button. This allows you to conveniently use the tool with one hand. Self-clamping wrenches are used for work in tight spaces, due to their simple operation.
- Pipe wrench - a characteristic feature of their design are grooves or teeth, allowing the jaws to clamp firmly on the surface of the pipe. They are predominantly used when carrying out plumbing work.
- Hook wrench - the upper jaw of this type of tool by its design resembles a hook, with teeth located on its inner side. It is used to unscrew bolts and nuts that have damaged edges.
