Rectifiers

Schmith rectifiers - rescue for the battery

Car rectifiers are indispensable, especially in the autumn and winter season, devices for charging and excitation of car batteries. A charger for quickly charging car batteries and checking the state of charge, like hydraulic jacks or socket wrench sets, are basic equipment for car workshops and an increasingly common accessory for every car owner.

A car battery charger is an invaluable helper when a vehicle's battery becomes too discharged and the car cannot be started. Battery charg ers, thanks to AC charging, allow you to excite a discharged battery and restore its full functionality by recharging it with electricity.

Types of battery chargers

Due to their construction, unique characteristics and type of operation, there are several types of battery chargers, such as:

  • Standard charger - this is the simplest type among car chargers, with no additional features or protection against short-circuiting or improper connection of starter wires. This type of device are budget solutions, based on the operation of a transformer, which is responsible for uncomplicated charging of batteries.
  • Traction rectifier - these types of rectifiers are used to charge batteries in cars, trucks, agricultural machinery, forklifts and even electric and hybrid vehicles. Most often, traditional chargers have variable charging modes for handling batteries of different intensities. These types of chargers are used to charge both lead-acid and gel batteries.
  • Impulse rectifier - impulse device also called smart rectifiers, are characterized by resistance to voltage drops in the network and overloads. Thanks to an advanced electronic circuit, pulse chargers constantly monitor the charging voltage level, providing the battery with protection against overcharging. These types of chargers are designed for gel batteries.
  • Microprocessor charger - microprocessor chargers are also called automatic chargers. These are the most advanced types of chargers, providing a high level of safety and a wide range of functionality. These devices work well for charging both lead-acid and gel batteries.

What to pay attention to when choosing a charger?

When choosing a battery charger, whether for professional or home use, it is worth paying attention to several of its features, such as:

  • Voltage - the most popular types of chargers are those that support 6/12V, used for charging motorcycle and boat batteries, as well as 12/24V, which are used for charging car and truck batteries. It is important that the charger has an output voltage equal to the battery voltage.
  • Charging current - determined by Amps, is an important factor in terms of battery life and charging speed. It is assumed that the effective charging current should be one-tenth of the capacity of the battery being charged.

In addition to the features of the charger, you should also pay attention to its additional functions, such as:

  • Desulfurization function - also called pulsed charging function. Devices equipped with desulfurization capability detect battery sulfation and, using pulsed current, remove it from the battery plates. This function regenerates the capacity of the battery and restores its long life.
  • Quick charge function - chargers with a quick charge function, allow you to start your vehicle in just a few minutes after connecting them to the battery. This is extremely useful, especially during sub-zero temperatures, when older batteries may refuse to obey and discharge.
  • Starting function - chargers with starters work well in situations where there is a need to start the car immediately.
