Schmith pickaxes - tools for working with hard soil and stones
Pickaxes are sturdy and robust tools with many uses. They are used for breaking, crushing and undermining various materials, so they are often used along with hammers and crowbars for demolition and other work, such as earthmoving, for example, where they are excellent for loosening hard and compacted ground or removing stones from the soil.
Types of pickaxes and their uses
Choosing the right pickaxe for the type of work being performed is crucial for the pickaxe to do its job. Different types of pickaxes differ from each other in design and can be divided into:
- One-sided pickaxe - also known as a pick or digging pick, is a tool that ends with a sharp spike on one side only. It is most often a lightweight, one-handed pickaxe, designed for more precise work in hard soil, clay and friable stone.
- Double-sided pickaxe - this is the most versatile and popularized model of pickaxe, ending with a sharp pick on one side and a chisel or spatula on the opposite side, used for undermining. The double-sided pickaxe, also known as a garden pickaxe, is the most common type for construction and garden work.
- Hammer pickaxe - is the heaviest type of pickaxe, used mainly in construction and demolition work. It has a sturdy spike and one side of the head and a massive hilt on the opposite side, allowing you to beat the pick with a heavy hammer.
What to look for when choosing a pickaxe?
Durability and wear resistance are the most important features that a pickaxe should have. Because of the work for which it is used, it must also be characterized by load resistance and several other properties, such as:
- Head material - due to the heavy loads, the pick head should be made of forged, hardened steel, which guarantees resistance to cracking, deformation and abrasion, remaining sharp and fully functional even after hitting stone or concrete. Pick heads must also be precisely balanced to maximize the kinetic force of the impact.
- Type of handle - picks, like hammers or axes, can have a handle made of hard beech or ash wood, characterized by good vibration dampening and a secure grip, or a handle made of fiberglass, called fiberglass, which is characterized by high resistance to moisture, mechanical damage and excellent vibration dampening properties. In addition, fiberglass handles are often covered with a layer of non-slip rubber for a secure and comfortable grip.
- Weight of the tool - picks are available in a variety of weights and, consequently, sizes. Lightweight picks usually weigh about 1.5 kg, while heavier versions weigh from 2.5 kg. The heavier the tool, the better it is at breaking up hard surfaces.
