Schmith hammer wedges - indispensable spare parts

The heads of hammers, as well as axes and pickaxes, must be firmly attached to the shaft, as this is crucial for the safety and efficiency of the work performed with these tools. In order to achieve a permanent connection between these components, it is crucial to use a hammer wedge, which determines the durability of the tools and the safety of its use.

Types of shank wedges

Many types of shank wedges are available, differing from each other in the material from which they are made, as well as in shape and purpose. The most common types of wedges are:

  • Wooden wedges - wooden wedges are the most popular and common types of wedges. They often come with spare handles or as repair kits for hammers with wooden handles. They are made of hard, beech or ash wood. They have a rectangular, tapered shape, suitable for the size of the handle for which it is intended. It is driven into a notch at the top of the shank, on the side of the tool's head attachment, where it spreads the shank to ensure a solid and durable attachment of the head.
  • Metal wedge - they are used on the same principles as wooden wedges, except that these are made of steel or another metal alloy, making them more durable and more solidly attached, and allowing the unnotched shaft to spread, in order to strengthen its attachment when it is only driven into the head, not attached to it.
  • Serrated flat wedge -serrated wedges are usually made of steel or brass, and have sharp serrations or notches on the outer edges, which drive into the wooden shaft and lock in place, providing a solid attachment and preventing the wedge from slipping out.
  • Round wedge - round wedges have a pointed ring shape. They are used for additional reinforcement of wooden wedges, so they are often driven transversely with respect to the flat wedge.
  • Repair wedges - wedge sets for stem repair usually consist of a wooden wedge and a round wedge, or a pair of wooden wedges and a metal wedge with or without serrations. A complete set allows you to firmly fix even slightly damaged shanks by spreading them as far as possible in the tool head.

How to choose a good repair wedge?

When choosing wedges for repairing hammers, picks or axes, it is important to pay attention to the material from which it is made. Wooden wedges should be made of hard woods, such as beech or ash, while metal wedges should be made of hardened steel or galvanized steel. In addition, it is worth noting whether the wedge is equipped with stays to prevent loosening of the fastening.
