Schmith trowels - basic construction tools

Construction trowels are basic, fundamental construction tools used by builders and finishers. They are used, like trowels or spatulas, for applying, spreading and smoothing various types of mortars, adhesives, plasters and other materials.

Trowels are simple tools, consisting of a flat working surface and a handle. They are commonly used to work with materials such as plaster, smoothing, mortar, adhesives or concrete. They are most commonly used for work such as:

  • Plastering and smoothing - used for applying and spreading plaster on walls and ceilings, as well as for troweling and smoothing the final layers.
  • Concrete work - used to level freshly poured concrete to prepare it for further processing. Trowels are also used to press curing sprinkles onto the surface of concrete.
  • Tiling -trowels are commonly used to evenly distribute adhesive for tiles and tile.
  • Application of mortars and adhesives - for precise and fast application of adhesives and mortars, as well as other types of construction compounds.
  • Removal of materials - floats can also be used as scrapers, for scraping off old layers of brittle materials, such as old plaster, paint or coatings.

Types of construction trowels and their applications

The wide range of applications for trowels has meant that many types are available, differing from each other in the material they are made of, as well as in shape, size and purpose. There are several basic types of trowels, such as:

  • Trowelmade of stainless steel - they are characterized by high durability, resistance to corrosion and abrasion, as well as a perfectly smooth surface, so they are used for smoothing plaster, application of smoothing and troweling surfaces.
  • Plastic t rowels - or PVC trowels, are lightweight, flexible and do not deform, so they are used for finishing work, as well as for thin-coat plastering and wet troweling.
  • Wooden t rowel - they have a porous surface, so they are used when working with concrete, especially for troweling it, in order to obtain a non-slip surface or to press in curing sprinkles.
  • Aluminum trowel - made of lightweight aluminum, they are used for troweling and pre-smoothing fresh concrete. Trowels made of aluminum are especially used to blend aggregate and prepare the surface for the next stages of work.
  • Rubber trowels - are characterized by a flexible surface and are available in different hardnesses, so they can be used for troweling plaster, removing trowel streaks and obtaining texture.
  • Serrated trowels - are equipped with rectangular or semicircular teeth of different sizes. Serrated trowels are used for spreading adhesives and eliminating air voids.
  • Butterfly trowel - these types oftrowels are used for sanding and smoothing drywall and plaster. They often have replaceable abrasive inserts.
  • Angle trowel - also known as a corner trowel, they have a special shape that allows you to work internal or external corners. They are used for precise smoothing of various types of masses in the corners, creating a perfect line and transition.
  • Troweltrowel - or long trowel or trowel batten, are long tools that allow quick processing of large areas. They are used to level and trowel them.

What features and parameters to pay attention to when choosing a trowel?

When choosing the right trowel for the job, it is worth paying attention to its features and parameters, which will ensure the comfort and expected results of work. Aspects to pay attention to are:

  • The type of material to be worked on - choosing the right material from which the trowel is made, for the dedicated material with which it works, is a key issue, determining the durability of the tool and the effects of work.
  • Size and shape - large trowels are designed for large areas, while small ones are better suited for hard-to-reach places, corners and precision work. The shape is also very important, rectangular floats are used for general use, while trapezoidal and beveled floats are used for more precise work.
  • Handle - an ergonomic handle provides comfort and convenience during work. The handle can be made of wood, plastic or rubber-coated plastic.
