Schmith flap wheels - for precision grinding work
Flapwheels with a mandrel are versatile and powerful abrasive accessories for precision grinding work. Shank wheels resemble rollers in their construction, made of multiple leaves of abrasive material, similar to flap wheels. In addition, they are equipped with an integrated mandrel, allowing them to be easily and quickly mounted on power tools such as drills, drill/drivers and milling machines, which significantly extends the range of applications of grinding wheels.
Applications of flap wheels
Flapwheels are used in many industries and jobs, and most commonly for activities such as, metalworking - to remove rough edges, grind welds, remove rust, as well as pre-polishing and finishing of metal surfaces, in the automotive industry - to prepare car bodies before repair work and also to clean various components, in construction - to grind various types of materials, in carpentry - to strip off old coatings and varnishes, as well as to prepare surfaces for varnishing or painting. Flap wheels with a mandrel are also used in a wide variety of workshop work, for machining and grinding metals, wood or plastics.
Features and types of mounted points
Mountedgrinding wheels for wood and steel can be separated into different types and kinds, designed for different work with specific materials. The most important features of mounted wheels, defining their application, are:
- Type of abrasive grain - the type of grain of grinding wheels determines their aggressiveness and service life. Most often, grinding wheels with a mandrel have grain made of silicon carbide, characterized by high aggressiveness, or aluminum oxide, which has a long service life.
- Gradation - the gradation in the case of abrasives, determines the size of the grain used in them, which affects the degree of aggressiveness of grinding. Low-gradation materials have a larger grain and are designed for strong and aggressive grinding, while higher-gradation materials are made of smaller and finer grain, which are used for delicate processing and surface dulling.
- Shape of the grinding wheel - the most popular and most common shape of grinding wheels on the mandrel, is cylindrical. However, there are also other types, having a conical, cup or disc shape, which allows you to select an abrasive accessory according to the irregularity and shape of the surface to be machined.
- Diameter of the grinding wheel - grinding wheels with mandrels are available in different diameters and different heights, which allows you to choose the right size for the job. The most common sizes of grinding wheels are 40x20 mm, 60x30 mm and 80x30 mm.
- Mandrel - most often, grinding wheels are equipped with a universal mandrel with a diameter of 8 mm, which allows the accessory to be attached to various power tools, such as drills and screwdrivers. Grinding wheels with a 6 mm shank are also available for use with smaller milling machines and mini grinders.
Gradation vs. use of a grinding wheel with a shank
Gradation, i.e. the thickness and quantity of the abrasive grain, affects the surface finish obtained after machining, as well as the speed and efficiency of the work carried out. There are several gradations for mounted wheels, which can be divided into:
- Low gradation - that is, gradations P40, P60 and P80, are used for fast and aggressive removal of over-grinding, coarse grinding, rust removal and peeling off old coatings, as well as for leveling surface irregularities.
- Medium gradation - which includes P100, P120, P150 and P180 grit accessories, are used for smoothing the surface, removing minor irregularities and scratches, as well as for preparing the surface before further processing steps, such as welding, painting or varnishing.
- High gradations - which include gradations of P220, P240, P320 and higher, are used for finishing grinding, removal of fine and minor scratches, preliminary polishing and smooth surface finishing.
