Depending on the activities performed, work clothing should be characterized by various properties, such as protection against adverse weather, mechanical, chemical or thermal factors.
Proper selection of health and safety clothing ensures optimal working conditions, increasing the comfort and safety of the employee, and thus the efficiency of the work performed. Work clothes for employees such as work shoes, sweatshirts, pants, gloves or safety glasses are divided according to the category of protection they provide:
- Category I - work clothes marked with this category provide protection for a low level of risk, which means that they are mainly used to protect against dirt and provide thermal comfort while performing work.
- Category II - safety clothing with this category of protection, also has a certificate proving its authenticity. Clothing marked with category two provides protection for an average level of risk, this group also includes warning clothing and clothing that provides partial protection against burns.
- Category III - this category includes clothing that provides the highest class of protection, including against chemicals. As with category two, here the class must also be certified for the quality of protection provided.
Types and applications of clothing for work
Protective clothing is divided into different categories, based on their applications. There are three basic types of health and safety clothing:
- Protectiveclothing - provides protection against various factors that accompany the performance of a certain type of work, such as low and high temperatures, dirt, mechanical damage and other factors.
- Warning clothing - serves primarily to increase visibility even in conditions of very poor air clarity. It is used very often when carrying out road work and in high traffic areas. Warning clothing is characterized by intense, neon colors and reflective elements.
- Work clothing - also known as worker's clothing or general-purpose clothing, is made of higher-strength materials that provide not only protection from dirt and minor mechanical damage, but also freedom of movement.
You can also divide protective clothing and health and safety accessories by protection against a specific type of danger. According to these criteria, the following are distinguished:
- Protective clothing against chemical agents and chemicals
- Protective clothing against mechanical damage
- Protective clothing against cold and hypothermia
- Protective clothing against heat and burning
- Protective clothing to protect against electric shock
- Clothing that provides protection against water and wetness
- Warning clothing to ensure visibility in difficult conditions
Features of work clothes
The main feature that defines the type of work clothing is its degree of protection. A second, equally important feature is the material from which the clothes are made. There are four types of materials used in the production of health and safety clothing, and these are:
- Cotton - an airy material of natural origin, which is soft, absorbent and fits well to the body. It is most commonly used for t-shirts and work shirts, as well as garments used in the summer season.
- Polyester - resistant to abrasion, dirt and water, is of synthetic origin, is mainly used in the production of protective clothing such as sweatshirts, jackets and pants.
- Mixed fabrics - this is usually a blend of cotton and polyester fabrics, which provides both comfortable wear and increased durability.
- Specialty fabrics - mainly used in the production of garments with specific properties. Specialty fabrics may have electrostatic, thermal insulation properties or increased fire resistance.
