Tools for woodworking are distinguished by their construction and the material from which they are made. The material of construction of a wood drill determines its durability, efficiency and speed, for this reason, a distinction is made:
- Carbide wood drill bits - also popularly known as fork drills, similar to concrete drill bits, are used for effective drilling of holes in wood of different hardness. Thanks to their carbide blades, they allow precise drilling of the hole.
- Carbon steel wood drills - these are the basic and most common types of drills. They are an economical solution, allowing to process wood of medium hardness.
- HSS wood drills - are used for drilling in soft and medium-hard types of wood.Drills made of HSS are characterized by long life and high durability.
Types of drills for woodworking
Drills used for drilling in wood are divided according to their construction and specific, often highly specified application. The division of wood drill bits is as follows:
- Twist drills - also known as spiraldrills. This is the most common type, used for drilling in wood and plastics.
- Brad-Point drills - this type of drill allows you to make very precise holes. Their characteristic feature is a spike located in the center of the cutting part, which ensures perfect drilling precision. BradPoint type drills are also characterized by a wide groove, which allows for smooth disposal of the excavated material.
- Self-feeding dr ills - are equipped with a distinctive helical tip, which is designed to position the drill during the hole and further bite into the workpiece. As a result, the drill creates the hole with greater ease. Self-feeding drills have a specific design that does not contain grooves designed to carry away chips and dust. For this reason, when using this type of tool, it is necessary to remove the excavated material manually or remove it with the help of compressed air from a compressor.
- Auger dr ills - popularly known as wood augers, similarly self-feeding drills are equipped with a helical taper on the cutting part. In addition, they have auger grooves on the entire working surface, which allow for excellent chip evacuation. These types of drills can be as large as several tens of centimeters.
- Shoring drills - these types of drills are used in the installation of various types of installations. Thanks to their design, they allow you to make holes not only in wood, but also in materials such as plaster or hollow block. A characteristic feature of this type of accessory, is a short working part and a very long handle.
- Forstner drills - are used for making holes with a flat bottom, suitable for retractable hinges. This makes Forstner type drills an indispensable accessory for carpenters and furniture assemblers.
- Blade drills - also known as flat-bottomdrills , allow you to make holes in wood with a diameter of up to several tens of millimeters. Their characteristic design includes a sharp tip and two flattened blades along with pointed edges, making it easier to make a clean hole.
- Wood hole saws- their construction resembles that of diamond holesaws, except that instead of a diamond blank, they are equipped with teeth resembling a wood saw. They are used for making shallow holes of large diameter. Bi-Metal holesaws, due to their distinctive design and the material from which they are made, also allow drilling in steel sheet metal, aluminum and plastics.
